RUNNING MATES (2006)
| read extract |
Embittered Derry judge Lou Johnston throws herself into politics after blowing a fuse over her fiancé’s stag night photos. But her plans to run for the Irish presidency receive a rude setback when her old flame Stan, now a popular senator, pitches his hat into the ring.
Lou and Stan soon find themselves enmeshed in the most crooked, underhand election of all time – and that’s before the notorious right-winger Joxer O’Duffy shows his hand.
As the race heats up, the various candidates are forced to call in the experts. These include Bend’em-Back Behan, the maverick priest who specialises in curing homosexuals; Tommy Bowtie the lawyer, whose Rapid Irritable Bowel Syndrome means he can no longer leave the office; and King Size Barkley, the notorious shakedown artist and nasty little bastard extraordinaire.
Then, a key player winds up dead as a nail on the floor of the Dail…
Running Mates, from the best-selling author of The Private Diary of a Suspended MLA, is a viciously funny look at the crookery, roguery and chicanery that is Irish politics today.
Not recommended for the pure of heart.
